Anime is not just a form of entertainment; it is a symbol of Japanese culture that has influenced people worldwide. In creating these works, producers have used their creativity and imagination to depict a variety of stories and characters. However, while freedom of expression is highly valued, societal changes and evolving norms have led to certain expressions becoming targets of criticism, sometimes resulting in regulation. Has this shift allowed creators to express their ideas without distortion?

What the Works Truly Want to Convey
Anime is one of Japan’s cultural treasures, and the characters and stories portrayed in it influence many people. Anime acts as a mirror reflecting the times, with creators conveying messages and worldviews through their works. However, as societal norms change, the expression in these works may be restricted. This can lead to a dilution of the original character and message of the work.
Changes Demanded by the Times
From the 1990s to the 2000s, discussions about LGBTQ+ issues began to expand in Japan. At the time, terms like "okama" and "onee" were used in television shows and anime for comedic purposes, but they were criticized as being discriminatory by members of the community. Since the 2000s, with an increase in human rights awareness, media began to self-regulate these expressions, and by the 2010s, the influence of the international LGBTQ+ rights movement further accelerated this change.
Using Urusei Yatsura as an Example
This shift in societal norms can be examined through the classic anime Urusei Yatsura. Originally aired in the 1980s, Urusei Yatsura was remade in 2022. The character "Shio-watari Nagisa" appears in the series. Nagisa, though male, dresses in women’s clothing and exhibits feminine behaviors.
In the original 1980s version, Nagisa was referred to as "okama," a term that highlighted his strength and convictions. Nagisa adopted this style due to his father’s influence, and although he was sometimes seen as strange by others, his resolve to live according to his own beliefs was depicted.
In contrast, the 2022 version of the character does not receive the same label of "odd person," and his internal struggles and determination are less emphasized. This difference is a result of evolving societal norms. However, this change has led to a loss of the character's original individuality and message.
The Impact of Expression Regulation and Its Challenges
As the movement to avoid discriminatory expressions related to LGBTQ+ issues grows, not only works like Urusei Yatsura but also other anime such as ONE PIECE and Gintama may be affected. These works have used the term "okama" to express a character’s beliefs and charisma. If such expressions are regulated, there is concern that the unique charm and message of these works could be lost.
Balancing Diversity and Freedom of Expression
Respecting diversity is important, but it is also necessary to protect the worldview and messages that creators wish to convey. Rather than simply eliminating terms deemed discriminatory, it is essential to consider the background of these words and the beliefs of the characters, and to explore appropriate ways of expression.
Anime evolves with the times and remains a cultural treasure that inspires many people. By finding new ways to incorporate diversity while preserving the positive aspects of past works, we can enrich the future of anime culture.
